I will now skip ahead a few generations. Alvin Prescott was born 1790 in Craven County, NC. At some point he had migrated to Georgia and on to Alabama. He died in 1860 and is buried somewhere in Randolph County, AL. He married three times and given the times he lived in that was not too unusual. A high mortality rate among women, especially when giving birth, was very common.  His first wife was Anne Sanderson. His second wife was Litia Locker. And Sarah K. Veal was his third. Sarah may have been the mother of his children and my great-great-grandmother

According to records, Alvin was drafted into military service in the War of 1812 and served under Capt. George Eason in the Drafted Militia, 2nd Regiment, North Carolina Detached Militia under Major Tisdale.

One son of Alvin was Simon Prescott. Simon was born circa 1835 in Georgia. He entered into Company B, 20th Alabama of the Confederate Army but was captured early and sent to a prison camp in the north and was there until the Civil War ended. The story is that he was sent to Selma, AL to be mustered out and settled near there. What is not known is where he died or was buried. He may have been living there or he might have been living with a son in Bell County, TX. That information is not clear. And if he did go to Bell County, he may be buried there. If any Prescott descendants that live in or around there reads this and can add to my information, please do so. . Simon married Frances Cole (or Kohl) who was born in Germany in 1825. They had eight kids.

My Grandfather James Alvin Prescott:

James Alvin was a son of Simon Prescott and is pictured at left. James Alvin was born in 1852 and died in 1933. He is buried at Providence Baptist Church in eastern Randolph County, AL.  His first wife Louisa, however, is not buried there. Instead, she was buried in the Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetary in Randolph County. I believe that the church has since been moved but the cemetary is still there. Her name was Louisa Cade (Kade) Lowe and they had nine kids. After her death James Alvin married Sarah Frances (Sallie) Ferrell. As a kid, I knew only Sallie as both James Alvin and Louisa had died. 'Sallie' died before I was 10 years old but I recall her visiting us on several occasions.

Louisa Cade (Kade) Lowe was the daughter of William Lowe and Lucy Davis. She and James had nine kids. James and Sallie had no kids but raised "Little" Charlie; believed to be the son of James Alvin's daughter Lucy, as their own. Lucy was the wife of Wesley Maddox and died young. I recalled as a kid being somewhat confused to have two 'Uncle' Charlies. Beside Little Charlie, Dad had a brother named Charlie.

My father was James Jackson Prescott, one of James Alvin’s sons. When I was younger, my Mother told me on several occasions that Grandpa James Alvin was disappointed that he never named one of his sons James Alvin. So Mother named one of my older brothers James Alvin to honor his wishes.

My Mother and Father meet and marry:

Each generation, one or more of  the descendents of John of Virginia have moved on. First to South Carolina, then to Georgia and finally to Alabama. And in Alabama  is where I was born; in Randolph County in October of 1931. In one sense, I have carried on that tradition of wanderlust by living and working in six other states from Florida to California; and in Washington, Idaho and Oregon in the Northwest. I finally retired to Tennessee, a southern state close to Alabama. However, as fortune would have it, I was not able to stay in Tennessee. I am present, back living in Oregon. And there you have it.
